Grooming Future Qualified Engineers and Quantity Surveyors

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change” – Charles Darwin, an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution.

As the world is moving towards the fourth industrial revolution, it is without a doubt that engineering and construction professionals have become a huge part of society as the world continues to evolve and change becomes inevitable. Similarly, engineers and construction professionals are sought after as professions to help shape the future of Malaysia. The country needs engineers and constructions professional, specifically quantity surveyors, to solve problems, contribute to the improvement and increase efficiencies while major infrastructure developments are underway.

Currently, according to the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), there are 11010 Professional Engineers and 81771 Graduate Engineers in Malaysia. Malaysia needs around 275,000 and 300,000 engineers in 5 and 10 years respectively. In addition, a Quantity Surveying (QS) degree has gained popularity since the last decade, due to the booming demand witnessed in the construction industry worldwide. The demand is also on the rise and will continue to increase in Malaysia’s construction industry over the next few years. Influenced by the fourth Industrial Revolution, the roles of a quantity surveyor have evolved from purely quantities measurement to the development of risk and value management, construction project management, contract administration and sustainability, legal and environmental services and more. While we are advancing towards Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0), there are high demands of Engineers and Quantity Surveyors from industries and Multi-national Companies.

According to Dr. Chia Chee Ming, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment (FOEBE) at SEGi University, SEGi University has been producing industry-relevant graduates. And in view of the IR4.0, FOEBE continues to update programmes offered to its Engineering and Built Environment students and collaborate with industry leaders to ensure its graduates are Industry 4.0 engineers and built environment professionals. Dr. Chia also shared that one of FOEBE’s popular degree is in Quantity Survey (QS), which not only attracts male students but also a large number of female students, “40% of the QS students at SEGi are female and I believe the number will continue to grow in the next few years, given the attractive career option and the transition in technology has gradually changed the QS field from being a male-dominated industry to one that lends more room for equal participation between genders.”

The QS degree at SEGi University is fully accredited by the Board of Quantity Surveyor Malaysia (BQSM) and the prestigious Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) from the UK, which means students who have completed the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying (QS) degree at SEGi University are eligible to register with BQSM to pursue professional quantity surveyors recognition with a minimum of two years of supervised working experience. The Quantity Surveying degree at SEGi University has attracted students from science and art streams, both local and international. As a SEGi QS graduates, students can choose to practice worldwide as a qualified quantity surveyor, contract and cost administrator, property and commercial executive, procurement adviser and contract executive or project executive. According to Dr. Chia, SEGi’s QS students are highly sought-after and 90% of the graduates in 2018 were employed within three months.

FOEBE focuses on a student-centred environment. Students are provided with opportunities to interact and work with industry partners on their assignments and projects and have access to advanced laboratories and workshops with essential tools in the development of their skills. The engineering and built environment programmes are delivered using applied methodologies and state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring SEGi University’s engineering and built environment students have all the advantages and opportunities to develop a successful career in their chosen field.

“Programmes offered at SEGi University, from foundation to postgraduate level, are well-rounded, meticulously planned and are equivalent to other prestigious international universities,” said Dr. Chia. He also stated that SEGi University offers high-quality education in engineering and built environment based on what graduates are expected to do in the workplace with industry-relevant scenarios and outcomes. As such, SEGi further developed its degree programmes in partnership with industries so that graduates are well-prepared for changes in the job market and the current Industry 4.0 revolution.

“The collaborations and partnerships with industry partners are intended to not only create academic cooperation but also opportunities and exposures given to SEGi’s Engineering and built environment students to prepare them before they venture into the real professional world. These exposures will ensure students obtain the experience of active learning by immersing themselves in real-live job experience that motivates and facilitates their transfer of skills into workplace situations. From these experience, they also get to apply problem-solving skills such as identify, analyse and solve problems, shaping them into future-ready graduates that create impacts and shape the industry of their choice.” added Dr. Chia.
